Monitoring Particulate Matter Air Pollution

With over 250,000 personal weather stations across the world, Weather Underground is able to provide millions of people with real-time weather data. To provide the public with localized air quality information, Weather Underground will add PurpleAir sensors to its network and offer the data on its website.

Presently there are four Purpleair air quality monitors on Amelia Island. Purpleair monitoring devices measure various sizes of particulate matter or PMs. PM 2.5, the smallest PM, according to the EPA, is the most dangerous air pollution. Like carbon monoxide it generally has no odor, however, unlike carbon monoxide, it crosses directly into the blood stream into the brain and nervous system. PM 2.5 causes inflammation of bodily tissues.

The monitoring device counts the number of particles and particle sizes with a laser. The monitor displays its Air Quality scores on a worldwide map, and its data is utilized and displayed by Weather Underground and The Weather Company (an IBM business). Google Maps also utilizes and displays Purpleair’s hyperlocal air quality results on cell phones when users choose the Air Quality layer. Google has also made Purpleair monitoring information available on Google Nest and other speakers. Users can now just ask Alexa for their outdoor air quality!
